2013 Student Safety Report

By: Awareity
On: August 5, 2014

The 2013 Student Safety Report helps explain why so many incidents and tragedies in schools are not prevented. Students see and hear about things most school administrators don’t. Students are talking about concerning behaviors (hurting others, self-harm/cutting themselves, suicidal ideations, bringing weapons to school, drugs/alcohol and other risks) among themselves, but unfortunately this information is not being shared with the right people.

“Students want help and students want to help other students, but too many gaps and silos exist” said Rick Shaw, CEO of Awareity. “This survey provides important insights into why so many students and school officials are struggling with student safety challenges. 85% of youth observing or witnessing bullying is a big problem, and suicide is the third leading cause of death for youth in our Nation. This gathered evidence provides school administrators with the validations they need to take immediate action and equip students with better ways to share what they know and equip all school personnel with the right tools to ensure incidents do not escalate into tragedies. If school administrators do not eliminate their gaps, we will continue to see more students becoming disconnected, underachieving or withdrawing from school, resorting to violence or tragically taking matters into their own hands.”
