OCEG recently announced poll results from a One Minute Poll about Policy Management.  In their poll, 429 members replied to the following question: How do you primarily manage lifecycle of internal policies, procedures and guidelines? 32% use an internally developed database or intranet system 24% have no formal structure 18% use file folders or centralized network drive 14% use document or policy management software  8% track changes in Word  4% use other methods   Lessons learned:  Bad guys already know what the results from this poll clearly reveal…People are an organization’s weakest links.  As long as 86% or more of organizations continue to useRead More →

Same Should Different Day!

I wrote a couple blogs in December 2010 about importance of solving bullying problems and about the importance of awareness, accountability and measurability in solving problems.  The underlying message in each of those 2010 blogs was to point out the need to SOLVE problems rather than just talking about what SHOULD be done. So in honor of Groundhog Day and the movie Groundhog Day, today is the perfect day to shed some light (or shade) on the dreaded “should all over yourself syndrome”. And for you Tony Robbins fans, you may have heard Tony tell us all to:  “Stop shoulding all over yourself”. SoRead More →

In case you didn’t notice among all the TARP and Stimulus Bill news…the Veterans Affairs Department has agreed to pay $20M to settle a lawsuit filed by veterans due to a VA laptop containing sensitive information stolen in 2006.  (Before I go any further, I want to be clear that I completely support veterans receiving compensation for out-of-pocket expenses that resulted from the computer theft, credit monitoring to protect against identity loss and medical expenses that were the result of severe emotional distress.) So how is “customized knowledge” and “individual-level accountability” worth at least $20M of your and my money (tax payer dollars)? For starters,Read More →

January 20th, 2009 was great day!  And for many reasons, January 20th, 2009 will long be remembered as a very important day in the history of the United States of America. As USA Today reported, President Obama’s speech mixed promises with rebukes of former President Bush. I do not want to get into the rebukes, but I would like to take this opportunity to highlight a few of President Obama’s comments and promises regarding accountability, responsibility and knowledge. Accountability –  And those of us who manage the public’s dollars will be held to account – to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our businessRead More →

Welcome to my next generation knowledge management blog. My blog will analyze real world incidents and multiple organizational situations and demonstrate why and how “next generation” and “knowledge management” efforts are critical to an organization’s success and how “next generation knowledge management” must replace ineffective “megaphone management”. “Next generation” = Forward-thinking ways to improve organizational results by replacing outdated and status quo processes. “Next generation” ideas will also help organizational leaders to perform at higher levels as business environments become more complex and more effectively engage and lead others to make better decisions and achieve better results. “Knowledge management” = While there are multiple definitionsRead More →
